‘Tis the season to be jolly, but for many families the sheer amount of decorations that have been amassed over the years does quite the opposite of sparking joy.
Keep you, your partner and your family happy this Christmas season by sorting out (and culling) your messy Christmas decorations. If they are not bringing you joy, you owe it to yourself to let them go.
Decluttering Christmas decorations can be difficult as many of these items have particular memories attached to them. No matter how tattered they might be, we are reluctant to let them go. But where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Three steps to decluttering your Christmas decorations
Just looking at your jumbled up Christmas decorations is an overwhelming task in itself, but these three simple steps will have you decking the halls in no time.
1. Love and display or let it go
You need to separate the Christmas decorations you truly love from the ones that are not so loved anymore. As you’re sorting through your items, ask yourself if a particular decoration is one you want to show off this year? If not, I’d recommend putting it aside to be donated to someone else who will use and treasure it as much as you have in the past.
2. Discard of tattered decorations
Items that are broken, discoloured or no longer fit your style can be let go. It’s so much better to make room for items to come into your home that will continue to bring you joy. You can’t do that if you’re already overloaded with items you don’t really love.
3. Pass on the Christmas spirit
The final category of items to get rid of are those that you think you may use one day but not this year. Be a little hard on yourself after you’ve decorated your home and purge most of the decorations you chose not to use this year. If you’re not going to display it in your home now, you’re most likely never going to. Again, donate or pass on these items to others who will benefit from and use them in ways that you will not.
If Christmas is about giving, here is a real chance to pass on the Christmas spirit in a kind and practical way to others less fortunate than you.
